Sumatera Utara (Northen Sumatra) is an Indonesian province since 1950. The arms of the province are: Arms: A landscape showing a mountainridge, works and a sea-port and a shore in base, all proper, in chief a five-pointed star Or and in the middle an eight-pointed shield Argent divided per saltire and with a medallion in the middle all with lines Azure: in chief a tree, in the dexter a leaf, in the sinister a rubber tree, in base a fish and on the medallion a woman planting padi. Supporter: A Hand of Justice supporting the shield with a chain. Garland: An ear of rice pf 45 grains, a branch of cotton of 17 flowers and two leaves Title: SUMATERA UTARA in black lettering on a yellow ribbon. In the arms the landscape refers to the mountains, the river, industry and sea-port. The five-pointed star is for the Pancasila or the five principles of the state. On the escutcheon in the middle are the symbols for the oil-palm groves, the tobacco culture, the rubber culture and the fishery and in the middle for rice-culture. The garland and the eight points of the escutcheon symbolize the date of the proclamation of the Republic Indonesia on 17 August 1945. The decree (in bahasa) adopting the arms reads as follows:

Medan, since 1886 the seat of the Head of the Region of the East-Coast of Sumatera (Oostkust van Sumatra) is the centre of the Deli-tobacco. To the tobacco culture which started about 1865 Deli owes its prosperity and Medan its rise. Arms: Or, a planted tobacco-tree proper, its blossoms Argent. Crown: A crown of three leaves and two pearls. Supporters: Two lions proper. Motto: „EFFLORESCENS E PLANITE”, in black latin script on a
white ribbon.[1] The motto means: “Flowering from the plain”, referring to
the fact that the city rose from the former plain. |

III. NEGARA SUMATERA TIMUR |

On 8 October 1947 the former Government of the East-Coast of Sumatra e the autonomous territory East-Sumatra. (Daerah Istimewa Sumatara Timur) was established. On the next 25 December the autonmous territory was made the State of East-Sumatra (Negara Sumatera Timur). When the Republik Indonesia Serikat was liquidated this state was liquidated too. Today the territory is an Indonesian province with the name Northern Sumatra (Sumatera Utara) |

The flag of the State of Eastern Sumatra consisted of three
breadths yellow, white and green, the colors of the arms of Medan. The
colors symbolize Greatness, Peace and Prosperity. [2] In
the emblem of the state the tobacco-plant from the arms of Medan returned in
the form of tobacco-leaves. Flag: Three

Negara Sumatera Timur 1949 No. 68, 14/20 december 1949” reads: “Het embleem van de Negara Sumatera Timur wordt gevormd door een tak
met drie sirihbladeren omkranst door tualangbladeren”. (“The
emblem of the Negara Sumatera Timur consists of a branch of three leaves of sirih,
surrounded by leaves of tualang”[3]) Standard of the Wali Negara On the standard of the Wali Negara (president)

middle of the yellow and green flag. |
