History

Bahia was discovered in 1500 by Pedro Alvares Cabral who landed on the coast south of todays’ Bahia near Porto Seguro. Between 1534 and 1566 five hereditary Captaincies were established in the region and in 1548 a Government General was established in Salvador.

The captaincy of Bahia, formerly a part of Sao Paulo, became a province in 1709.

In 1798 an insurrection was leaded by educated negroes with the aim of establishing a Republic of Bahia. The insurrection was suppressed and its leaders executed on the Largo da Piedade on 8 November 1799. Other insurrections occured in 1821, 1832 and 1837.

At an early stage of the Brazilean struggle for independence a provisional government was installed in Vila de Cachoeira by Miguel Calmon du Pin e Almeida, nicknamed Marques de Abrantes. On 2 July 1823 Bahia became a part of the Brazilean Empire and in 1889 a part of the Republic.

Heraldry

In the time of the Empire the arms used by the provinces were the Imperial Arms. At the proclamation of the Republic the states  were granted the right to adopt their own achievements.

The arms of the state of Bahia are known from shortly after 1889 when they occur in a review of laws from 1891.[1] They are:

Arms: A sailing vessel issuant from the dexter, ensigned with the flag of Brazil, on waves of the sea, on its deck a man looking in the direction of a mountain on the shore, all proper.

Crest: A five-pointed star radiant and ESTADO DA BAHIA in a semicircle.

Supporters: A smith with hammer, anvil and cogwheel proper on the dexter, shaking hands with the figure of Liberty, vested Azure with a cap of liberty, a level in het left hand and supporting the flag of Brazil, at her feet some cannonballs, on the sinister.

Motto: PER ARDUA SURGO (By Effort we Succeed) and the word BRASIL in base

For the insurrectional flags see Bandiere, passato e presente (in italian).

The Constitution of the Federation of 1934 abolished the symbols of the states and their achievements were replaced by the national emblem.

The Federal Constitution of 1946 restored the autonomy and also the achievements of the states.

After 1947, when the flag of Bahia was readopted, the arms were modified:

Arms: A sailing vessel, issuant from the dexter on waves of the sea, on its deck a man waving a kerchief in the direction of a mountain on the shore, all proper.

Crest: A five-pointed star and the words ESTADO DA BAHIA in a semicircle.

Supporters: On the dexter a smith with hammer, anvil and cogwheel proper, shaking hands with the figure of Liberty, vested Vert with a cap of liberty, a level in her left hand and  supporting the flag the state being of  four stripes white and red an a blue canton a white triangle on the sinister.

Motto: PER ARDUA SURGO on a red ribbon; below the word  BRASIL
